Our Blender 3D Story

This being our first design blog, we decided to tell you abut how we went from using mainstream design tools, and eventually ended up falling in love with Blender 3D.

We run a design firm here in Bengaluru, India, called Eesharth Designs, and for a good 2 years into the business, we were among the firms who resorted to using more “well known design tools” such as Solidworks by Dassault Systems and Fusion 360 by Autodesk, and while the two tools are incredibly powerful and we still rely on them for the more demanding projects, we also fell in love with their rather more inexpensive competitor, Blender 3D.

When it comes to design tools, we like to think of them as an extension of designers. As humans, we are limited to only to our imagination, and these tools help us take our ideas from a simple 2D form to a stylish 3D format. Whats more, we even get photorealistic renders which allows us as designers, and the clients also, to visualise what the final product will look like. To say that the aforementioned softwares are lacking in these features, would be terribly unfair, because truthfully, they feature a full suite of features that can elevate your design to the next level, maybe even higher,  and at a consistent level of performance. But what if you are a young designer, fresh out of college, with a budget equal to a pocket money. In a situation like that, the students are hard pressed to resort to using the “Student Edition” of the design tools, but those versions lack the full functionality that you would otherwise get in the fully paid suites, which truth be told, we still found hard to afford even after an year of work. Thats where Blender takes the win. Not only does it offer the entire 3D pipeline – modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation, but it gives you access to ALL these features absolutely for free !!

When we first started off with Blender, we found the interface quite overwhelming, because there were too may features on offer in one place, but after a week of tinkering around with the tool, we had already designed a plethora of designs, all of which were well received by our clients and critics alike.

We are product designers by profession and using Blender for professional product design is something we are still working on, but what gets our attention the most is the sheer versatility of the tool. Ever since we started using Blender, we have been able to compile every little deliverable that is expected from a product designer. The model is smooth, the renders are photorealistic, and the fact that Blender allows coders to run APIs makes it a tool for the masses and add to that the open source tag, and what you have is an absolute titan of a design software.

The Blender community is growing exponentially and the tool is finding application in many projects in the world of animation, video games and also, product design. Being part of this community not only makes us proud, but also excites us to find out the possibilities that Blender holds in case of product design.
